Choosing a kids' art class shouldn't feel like research. But every parent in Dartford and Ebbsfleet ends up asking the same five questions before they book — and most of the websites you'll find don't actually answer them.
This is my honest parents' guide, written by Shilpi Jain — I run Shilpkar in Ebbsfleet Garden City. I'll cover what to look for, what to ask, what we do differently, and where to actually book a trial.
What makes a good kids' art class?
After ten years teaching, I've narrowed it down to four things parents should look for:
- A DBS-checked tutor, with a recent certificate they're happy to show you. (Mine is enhanced — happy to share.)
- Small groups — ideally 12 kids or fewer. Above that, your child becomes a face in the crowd.
- Real techniques, not colouring sheets. If the class plan is "fill in this template", you're paying for childcare, not art education. Look for acrylic, mandala, mixed-media or watercolour mentioned in their plan.
- A clear pricing structure. No hidden materials fees, no "supplies extra" surprises.
If any of those four are missing, look elsewhere.
Questions worth asking before you commit
- "Can I bring my child for a single trial session?" — If the answer is no, that's a flag.
- "What ages are in the class my child would join?" — Mixed-age groups can work, but tutors need a plan for it.
- "What will my child take home each term?" — A portfolio of 4–6 finished pieces is realistic.
- "Are materials included?" — They should be. You shouldn't be buying canvases on top.
- "How do you handle a child who's nervous or new to art?" — Listen for empathy here.
What weekly classes run in Dartford & Ebbsfleet?
I currently run multiple weekly classes for ages 3–16. They're listed live on the art classes timetable — that page auto-updates as I add new dates, so it's always current.
A typical month includes:
- Saturday mornings at Ebbsfleet Garden City — mixed-age beginners
- Wednesday after school in Dartford — KS2 (7–11 years)
- Friday after school in Dartford — KS3+ (11–16 years)
- Sunday afternoons — open studio for parent-and-child painting
Each session is 1.25 hours. All materials included. £8 for a trial, £32 for a month of 4 sessions.
What we actually do in class
A typical session looks like this:
- First 10 minutes: I demo the day's technique on the easel. The kids watch, ask questions.
- Next 60 minutes: They paint. I move between students, helping with composition, colour mixing, brush control.
- Last 15 minutes: We do a "gallery walk" where each child shows what they made and one thing they tried.
Over a term, kids build a portfolio they're proud of — and a vocabulary for talking about colour and form that surprises a lot of parents.
