Spring in Dartford is genuinely a lovely time to be a parent. The cherry blossoms come out at Central Park, half-term lands at the perfect time for outdoor adventures, and the Ebbsfleet community is at its best.
I'm Shilpi at Shilpkar, based in Ebbsfleet Garden City. Here are the things I'd recommend to a friend with kids visiting this spring — including some free ones.
1. Central Park, Dartford
The big one. Free, beautifully kept, and right in town. The playground was refurbished in 2024 and is genuinely fun. Best for ages 2–10.
Tip: The café at the south end does a decent flat white. Pram-friendly all the way around.
2. Bluewater — but the right bits
Bluewater is the obvious answer, but I'd skip the shops and head to:
- The boating lake (free to look, £4 a pedalo)
- The Showcase Cinema for rainy days
- Hollywood Bowl for over-5s
- Adventure Golf outside — surprisingly good
Skip the indoor playgrounds — overpriced and crowded after 11am.
3. Ebbsfleet Garden City community events
Ebbsfleet has come into its own as a family destination. Worth checking:
- The Saturday community market at Bluewater Park (monthly, free)
- Free outdoor cinema nights in summer (usually June–August)
- The Springhead Nature Reserve — surprisingly wild, two minutes off the A2

4. Painshill, just over the M25
A bit of a drive but worth it for older kids. The garden trail takes two hours and has the famous crystal grotto. Good for 5–14 year olds who'll humour you for a "history walk".
5. Hever Castle
About 35 minutes away. Beautiful gardens, jousting demos in summer, and a stunning yew maze that kids will spend an hour in. £25 family ticket — pricey but worth it as a once-a-spring treat.
6. A kids' art class
I'd be remiss not to mention it. We run weekly art classes in Dartford and Ebbsfleet for ages 3–16. £8 for a trial session. Perfect for a Saturday morning when the weather isn't cooperating.
It's not the obvious "thing to do" — but it's the one parents tell me their kids ask about again the following week.
7. The Dartford Library
Underrated. Free baby and toddler sing-along sessions every Tuesday morning. Half-term holiday craft sessions are usually free too (book online — they sell out).
8. Stone Lodge Park
Less crowded than Central Park, big open spaces, a small playground. Good for picnics on warmer days. Free parking.
9. The Riverside Walk
The walk along the Darent from Dartford Town Centre to the Thames is a hidden gem. Two miles, pram-friendly, and you might spot kingfishers. Best on a sunny Sunday morning.
10. Workshops at Shilpkar

Whatever you do, Dartford and Ebbsfleet are genuinely brilliant for families. I see new parents discovering it every week.
